Scottish Experience
Golfing Breaks
Home to unsurpassed selection of world-class golf courses of international
standing and being the original founder of golf, Scotland is renowned
globally as the ‘Home of Golf’. Encompassing prestigious ancient courses
at St. Andrews to an endless choice of premium private country clubs,
municipal courses and driving ranges, both beginners and professional
golfers have the opportunity to play in some of the finest Open Championship
Courses in the world, firmly placing both Glasgow and Scotland as
a leading destination for golf breaks.
Situated within close proximity to Glasgow and our superbly appointed
guesthouse in the cultural heart of the city, the magnificent coastal
county of Ayrshire offers a superb range of links courses along its
stunning coastline, each offering superb panoramic vistas over the
Firth of Clyde and the rugged beauty of the Isle of Arran when playing
full 18 hole round of golf. The county is a mecca for those passionate
about playing on premium quality links courses that regularly attract
visitors from Europe, North America, Ireland and other regions of
the UK. Ayrshire in Scotland’s South West is proud of its longstanding
history of golf, having staged the very first Open Championship in
1860 at Prestwick Links. The county’s premium courses can be found
along its southern littoral at Turnberrry, home to the redesigned
Ailsa and Kintyre courses that have attracted household names to three
World Open Championships since 1977. Acclaimed for their challenging
undulating greens and fairways, Turnberry is justifiably placed within
the top 20 in the world.
With approximately 500 golf courses of varying statures to choose
from, Scotland offers golfing enthusiasts a wealth of activities and
events staged each year up and down the country, tailored for both
the spectactor and the player. Summer 2006 will play host to the Barclay’s
Scottish Open at the award-winning Loch Lomond Golf Course, situated
20 miles from the centre of Glasgow and providing spectators with
a breathtakingly awesome setting by the shores of Scotland’s largest
freshwater expanse. Ranked as the 21st most prestigious course in
the world, Loch Lomond Golf Course is a regular host to the Scottish
Open since its establishment in 1994 and is set to be a pre-eminent
tournament as ever with an impressive field of outstanding players
from the UK, Europe, North America and beyond.
Why not test your ability and follow the traces of Tiger Woods, Jack
Nicklaus and other world-class professionals at the legendary old
course of St Andrews during the annual St Andrews Golf Week each spring.
Tailored for golfers across the whole spectrum, you can practice your
swing and technique under the instruction of professional tutors or
take part in a series of competitions that include the longest drive,
scramble and nearest the hole whilst embracing the unique ambience
of playing in one of the world’s oldest courses.
Equally, Glasgow and its environs are home to an excellent provision
of municipal courses that certainly prove to be as challenging, most
of which are set in beautiful parkland within the city boundaries
and open countryside around the periphery of the city’s vast urban
expanse. The nearest course to the centre of Glasgow is the nine-hole
Alexandra Park Golf Course lying approximately 3 miles to the east
of the city centre, offering an excellent vantage point across Glasgow
to as far as the Tinto Hills in South Lanarkshire.
