Over the years, the Citizens' has undergone a series of transformations and since 1990 when Glasgow was awarded the European City of Culture; it received a major refurbishment with a contemporary-style façade replacing the traditional Victorian structure. Complementing the 600-seat main auditorium, two studio theatres were introduced to the Citizens' in 1992, namely the Circle Studio and The Stalls Studio, having capacities of 120 and 60 respectively. The additional theatre space was established in response to the growing demand for showcasing experimental and small-scale productions in Glasgow and is largely welcomed by touring production companies for representing plays and stage adaptations in an intimate environment. The Citizens' Theatre is home to its own theatre production company, The Citizen's Theatre Company who have successfully recreated 288 productions since their formation in 1970, including intriguing stage adaptations of world-class plays and novels penned by authors and playwrights of international standing. Over the years, their dynamical repertoire has featured Bram Stoker's Dracula, George Cukor's classic tragedy Camille as well as the works of Europe's finest authors such as Goethe, Balzac, Sartre and Tolstoy. Retaining its traditions and values in making theatre accessible to wider audiences, The Citizens' Theatre continues to showcase an eclectic repertoire of productions and stage adaptations at very reasonable prices, ranging from Shakespeare's timeless classics such as Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet to children's favourites like Charlotte's Web. Continuously operating a 'pay what you can' policy for all previews, The Citizens' is a firm favourite amongst avid theatregoers and the local community alike, providing an inexpensive and enjoyable night out at one of Glasgow's premier institutions of the performing arts.
