Family Breaks in Glasgow
Charles Rennie Mackintosh
A globally celebrated artist, designer and architect,
Charles Rennie Mackintosh developed his unique Art Noveau style
from the 1890s to 1920s. Superb examples of his work can still
be enjoyed throughout Glasgow.
One of eleven children, Mackintosh studied at Glasgow School of Art,
a building he later redesigned. He won a competition to join an architectural
firm and went on to become a master, his work varying from private
houses to schools. |

Not only famed for buildings, Mackintosh was an excellent artist and
furniture designer, examples of which can be seen in various sites
throughout Glasgow. By the end of the 19th century Glasgow was a leader
in European architecture, not least due to the genius of Mackintosh.
Europe quickly appreciated his original designs but he was relatively
unknown in his native city before his death in 1928. It is ironic
that, towards the end of the 20th century, he was recognized as the
father of the now famous 'Glasgow Style'.
His legend lives on in Glasgow and his breathtaking work is truly
a must-see experience. There are over 12 public Mackintosh sites to
explore and with buildings such as the Glasgow School of Art, Willow
Tearooms, and House for an Art Lover to name a few, you will not be
disappointed.
