About Glasgow .. Something for everyone
Glasgow Carling Academy
Established in 2003 to meet the demands for the city’s energising
live music, club and comedy scene, Carling Academy Glasgow is the
fifth live music and club venue to be acquired by the Academy Music
Group Limited, a leading player in the UK’s music industry sponsored
by English Beer giants Carling. This grand music venue is located
in Eglinton Street in Glasgow’s South Side in a magnificently
refurbished art deco building that previously housed the New Bedford
Cinema, a legendary Glasgow institution.
The New Bedford originally opened in 1921 and like many art deco cinemas
across the UK, it was subsequently transformed into a Bingo Hall in
the 1970s as a result of the decrease in cinema audiences and the
advent of the petrol shock of the 1973. In today’s setting,
this aesthetically pleasing art deco showpiece has undergone extensive
restoration and refurbishment at a cost of £3,000,000 to produce
one of Glasgow’s most exciting live music venues en par with
the Glasgow Apollo (closed in 1985), fondly remembered by avid concert
goers and world-class performers from the 1960s onwards.
Exquisitely restored to its former glory, The Glasgow Carling Academy
incorporates the essential state-of-the-art technologies required
for a 21st Century live music venue including first-class sound
and lighting system adapted for both live gigs, DJ and Club nights,
stand-up comedy and to avant-garde dance and theme events. The Academy
accommodates up to a maximum of 2,500 people both seated and standing
and has the flexibility to convert into a shorter hall configuration
for small-scale events and gigs with a maximum capacity of 1,100.
The venue is also a popular choice for various live acts at the
Glasgow International Comedy Festival and since 2004, it has attracted
the crème of British stand-up comedy to the Academy stage
including Johnny Vegas, Jerry Sadowitz, Dara O’Briain, Paul
Merton and Al Murray amongst others. The Auditorium can be adapted
to an all-seated option tailored for such events and is set to retain
its leading position for showcasing the diversity of talents featured
in the city’s high-octane annual festival programme.
A welcome addition to Glasgow’s entertainment scene by both
music aficionados and the entertainments industry alike, Glasgow
Carling Academy is crowned for its thrilling and electrifying atmosphere
by the many live acts who have wooed audiences at the Academy stage
since its inception in March 2003. With such an eclectic diary of
rock music, R&B, indie, blues, pop and dance events, this magnificent
venue assures an exceptional programme of outstanding talents on
any given week during your visit to Glasgow, ranging from the biggest
international performers such as The Flaming Lips, King’s
of Leon to host of mainstream UK. artists with the likes of Mis-Teeq,
Sugababes, Ian Brown, Basement Jaxx and Prodigy to name but a few.
The Glasgow Academy has proven to be a success and continues to
enthral popular music lovers from Glasgow and beyond with its magnificent
sets and live acts scheduled throughout the year. Concertgoers have
a selection of 5 bars within the venue to indulge in a drink or
two during concerts or intervals, some of which include large plasma
screens and first-class audio systems that relay the event as you
order your round of drinks. For more information on up and coming
